Brief History Of S.G.S. Sabha, Calicut
The community's traceable history in Calicut is from late eighteenth century. The earlier settlements were Das Naik Compound, Kamathi Madom and Swarga Madom. The occasional Bhajans and other cultural activities held at these places provided a chance for a get-together of families living at that time. In 1935 there was an organisation named Gowd Saraswath Yuvak Samaj which was dissolved later due to the lack of interest of its members. The idea of launching a permanent organisation to do more creative things dawned on us only in mid 1970's. It was the inspiration that we received at the Das Naik Birth Centenary Celebration that gave us an impetus to start an organisation of our own. Realising the importance that we should have an organisation to foster unity and fraternity among the members, to provide a helping hand to the weaker section and also to bring out cultural and moral upliftment of its members. Few generous people of the community, with a mind of service, joined together and formed an Ad Hoc Committee of the S.G.S. Sabha on 27-1-1974 under the convenership of Sri.G.Balasunder Prabhu. The following persons were in the lead. (1) Sri.H.Manjunath Rao, (2) Smt.Vatsala Manjunath Rao, (3) Sri.U.Dathatriya Rao, (4) Sri.S.Rajagopal Rao, (5) Sri. Sarvotham Mallaya, (6) Sri.G.Balasunder Prabhu, (7) Sri.A.Shanker Maller, (8) Sri.U.Sadashiv Rao, (9) Sri.M.P.J.Kamath, (10) Sri.B.R.Baliga, (11) Sri.N.C.Shenoy, (12) Sri.R.N.Prabhu etc.
It was decided that the disciples of Kashi Mutt Kavle Mutt, Gokarn Mutt, and Chitrapur Mutt should be enrolled as members of the S.G.S. Sabha. In the first general body meeting held on 17-2-1974 Sri.H.Manjunath Rao was elected as the founder president of the Sabha. Sri.Rajagopal Rao became the first secretary. The response from the members was worth mentioning that the founders could immediately raise funds to provide financial help to the weaker section of the community as well as to distribute scholarships and books to the deserving students. During their tenure, holydays like Vijaya Dasami and Yugadhi, were celebrated in a befitting manner. Under the Convenership of Sri.G.Balasunder Prabhu a Sub Committee was formed to conduct a Musical Night of Pandit Padmasree Bhimsen Joshi in 1975. The Programme was carried out efficiently and they could raise huge amount out of it, which became the back bone of the S.G.S.Sabha's future economy. Financial help to the weaker section and sholarships to deserving students are continued all these years. Celebrations like Yugadhi, Sravana Poornima, Viajaya Dasami, Deepavali etc. are being continued.
From 1977 under the leadership of Sri.V.Sarvothama Mallaya the sabha could march forward still further. It was during his time that the Vanitha Vibhag and Vidhyarthi Vibhag were given a concrete shape (78-79). Both Vibhags began to take much interest in the activities of the Sabha. 1979 was a mile stone in the history of the S.G.S.Sabha. It was during this year that the monthly "Saraswath Vani" was first published whose credit indeed goes to Sri.Sarvotham Mallaya and his team. This regular monthly with interesting articles, current Sabha news etc. is distributed free among the members. Assets of the Sabha increased remarkably under the Presidentship of Sri.K.Narayan Bhat, Sri.V.Sarvotham Mallaya and Sri.N.Damodar Rao.
There was a boom in the activities of the Sabha from 1982 when Sri.N.C.Shenoy became the President. He gave much inspiration to both the Vibhags that they and his worthier team could add much colours to the various programmes. Vanitha Vibhag introduced 2 novel items like "Haldi Kum Kum" and "Samoohika Sathya Narayana Pooja" which were praised by one and all. It was with the whole hearted support of his team he remained in the forefront to construct a house for a poor family of the Sabha.
Later. Sri.M.Janardhan Naik, Sri.N.Vittal Das Shenoy, Sri.V.Chandrashekar Naik and Dr.G.Ganapathi Rao have been in the forefront as Presidents.
During the Presidentship of Sri.K.Surendra Rao continuously for 6 years Sabha's bank deposits grew considerably. From 2000 onwards Saraswath Vani was borughtout in a book shape with a new look. The Silver Jubilee Celebration of the Sabha conducted in 1999 was a land mark event in the history of the Sabha.
Sabha is hugely indebted to Sri.K.Surendra Rao who was generous enough to donate 12 cents of land for constructing a building. The sale proceeds of this land was utilised to buy 26.36 cents of land at Mankav. A committee headed by Shri.S.D.Shenoy did a marvelous job to initiate and complete the construction of the building. Finally "Saraswath Bhavan" became a reality because of the efforts put in by Shri.M.Nithyanand Kamath who had almost single handedley took up the project and completed it. Sixth July Two Thousand Eight was the auspicious day on which "Saraswath Bahavan" was inagurated by Late Shri.V.Mohandas Naik whe sabha was under the Stewardship of Shri.M.Nithyanand Kamath (President), Shri.D.Sudhakar Beliga (Secretary) and Shri.Sunil.V.Pai (Treasurer).
